About
Opened in 2019, this sensational Filipino eatery in Southeast Portland has garnered top honors over the years. Food & Wine named Chef/Owner Carlo Lamagna to its 2021 List of “Best New Chefs,” and the James Beard Foundation concurred, nominating him in 2022 as a “Best Chef: NW & Pacific” Finalist. What’s more, Oregonian dubbed Magna Kusina “Restaurant of the Year” in 2021, and, this year, Infatuation gave it a place of honor on its “21 Best in Portland” list. Chef Lamagna, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, is thrilling diners with such Filipino dishes as tuhog (grilled skewers) with chicken, pork, scallop, or mushrooms, lumpia (eggrolls with pork, mushrooms, and carrots), escabeche (fried pompano with green papaya), and Mom’s crab fat noodles. Food & Wine says, “Carlo Lamagna approaches Filipino food like a Grand Prix driver: He drives with extreme precision and finesse, but he isn’t afraid to press on the gas.”
