Anelya
5-Course Modern Ukranian Tasting Event
Opened last October, this Avondale eatery that extols Ukrainian cuisine jumped right onto Chicago Magazine’s List of “Best New Restaurants” and Eater’s “Hottest in Chicago” List. Chef/Owner Johnny Clark, a Cincinnati native and Culinary Institute of America grad who cooked at Wherewithall and Parachute, started his new venture (named for his grandmother) with his wife and fellow chef Bevery Kim as a pop-up designed to provide humanitarian aid. Chefs Clark and Kim see Anelya as a way to preserve Ukrainian culture - and what better way than turning out supernal versions of dishes like eggplant rolls with farmer’s cheese and dill, borsch (no ‘t’ in Ukrainian) with duck and smoked pears, stuffed peppers, and krovankya (blood sausage with sauerkraut and dried fruit). Amazing desserts are on hand too, like “medovik” ice cream (sour cream, honey cake crumbs, and honey comb), napoleon with lychee-rose jam and black tea pastry cream, and apricot sorbet with pickled spruce tips. “Thrilling and soul-warming in equal measure…exceptional,” raves Time Out, so naturally we are pumped to visit here and to learn more about Ukrainian cuisine. See you there!
