Chelo

Day 4: 5-Course Tribute to Guadalajara Tasting Series

A celebrated Portland dining experience since it opened as a pop-up in 2017, Chelo has appeared on Eater’s List of “Best Oaxacan in Portland” and Eater also named Owner & Head Chef Luna Contreras the 2023 PDX “Chef of the Year.” Chef Luna’s inspiration comes from her grandmother, Mama Chelo, who ran a restaurant in Guadalajara, Jalisco. A Mexican native, Chef Luna oversaw two highly praised Mexican restaurants in San Francisco, Padrecito and Mamacita, which the Michelin Guide honored with six Bib Gourmand awards. At Chelo, she delights diners with a full range of offerings that evoke the best of Oaxaca, from gorditas with local mushrooms, leeks, kale and chicories to scallop crudo with cranberry jam and salsa verde to camarones en chilmole negro (coal-grilled shrimp skewers with garlic aioli) to a luscious almond tres leches cake. “So far, it’s the best meal—and the warmest service—I’ve had in Portland this year,” said Axios critic Meira Gebel this past June. We’re excited to visit Chelo and to hear all about Oaxacan cuisine from the fabulous Chef Luna!
