El Secreto de Rosita
5-Course Modern Peruvian Tasting Event
Opened in May of 2021 on U Street, this modern Peruvian and Pan-Latin eatery was named to this year’s Eater’s List of “Best Dining in DC.” The brainchild of restaurateur Mauricio Fraga-Rosenfeld, El Secreto de Rosita occupies the space formerly inhabited by Fraga-Rosenfeld’s popular hookah bar Chi-Cha Lounge. Executive Chef Cristian Granada, a Colombia native who comes to the job from Xiquet (a high-end, Michelin-Starred Spanish venue in Glover Park) oversees a menu that prominently features criollos, or Peruvian comfort foods, including a selection of ceviches, lomo saltado (tenderloin stir-fry), berenjena el macho (baked and torched eggplant), and arroz con pollo, as well as “Peruvian Asian” dishes such as arroz chaufa (fried rice with a choice of protein) and chi jau kay, which presents chicken, steak, or tofu in a soy-orange reduction. Pisco sours are on hand to wash it all down, all served up in an Amazonian forest environment, with dangling plant life and jungle green wallpaper. “El Secreto de Rosita is as easy on the tongue as the eyes, a hacienda full of good taste,” says Washington Post restaurant reviewer Tom Sietsema. ‘Nuff said. See you there!
