Fukumoto
5-Course Ode to Izakaya Tasting Event
England has its pubs, Germany has its beer gardens, and Japan has its izakayas, those after-hours establishments where people unwind over sushi and sashimi, yakitori, and other such comfort foods. Fukomoto, opened in 2015 in the Swedish Hill historic district, has been dispensing comfort for almost a decade under the aegis of Chef/Owner Kazu Fukumoto, who was born in Fukuoka, Japan on the northern shore of Kyushu Island. He emigrated to the US in 1999, got hired as a dishwasher at Musashino, and ultimately rose to become its head sushi chef. Fukumoto is his personal triumph, leaping onto Eater’s 2024 List of “15 Essential ATX Sushi Restaurants” and Infatuation’s 2024 List of “Best Sushi in Austin.” From the karaage to the tempura to the maki rolls and the yakitori, everything you love about a Japanese restaurant is here and done to a fine turn. “The sushi is perfect. The marinated and grilled yakitori menu is fantastic,” raves Time Out. We eagerly await our visit to this exciting spot, where we will converse with Chef Fukumoto and hear all about his food ideas.
