Kaliwa
5-Course Korean Meets Southeast Asian Tasting Event
Opened in 2018 on the D.C. Wharf, this Filipino eatery immediately landed on Eater's list of "Best New Restaurants in D.C." and received Michelin Bib Gourmand awards in 2022 and 2023. Kaliwa was created by Chef Cathal Armstrong, whom the James Beard Foundation nominated as Best Mid-Atlantic Chef for three successive years and who was selected by Food & Wine for their list of “50 Hall of Fame Best New Chefs." Chef Armstrong is married to Meshelle Armstrong, whose family owned Little Quiapo, a celebrated Filipino restaurant, and he conceived of Kilawa as a paean to that cuisine he loved so much. There are also plenty of Thai and Korean influences on Kilawa's menu, so diners can expect everything from the vaunted adobo to superb pad thai to Filipino mango salad to panang curry and so much more. (Did we mention the awesome desserts like ube mousse with crunchy dark chocolate and the flan and pandan cake?) "Their adobo is the kind of comfort food I could eat once a week," raves Washingtonian restaurant reviewer Ann Limpert, while Washington Post reviewer Tom Sietsema says, "There's nothing quite like Kaliwa, where three popular cuisines are offered in what feels like a fun house." Comfort? Fun? Much needed in these troubled times, so see you there for an evening hosted by Head Chef Stephon McCrea!
