Komaaj Mazze

Day 2: 5-Course Revisiting Iranian Roots Tasting Series

Opened this past February, this Mission District eatery celebrating Iranian cuisine has appeared on Eater’s List of “Hottest in SF” and Infatuation’s “Hit List”, although we'd expect nothing less given previous incarnation Komaaj was one of our top-rated hosts. Chef/Owner Hanif Sadr grew up in Tehran and spent summers on his grandparents’ farm in northern Iran. After earning a college degree in materials science, he went to work in his country’s large oil and gas fields. He then came to the United States in 2012 for a graduate program on renewable energy at San Jose State University and was asked to become a cook despite having no previous knowledge. His family’s longtime cook in Iran became his tutor. Since then, he has become a fixture of the Bay Area food scene, with his wildly popular pop-ups and his farmers’ market appearances. At Komaaj Mazze, he is introducing diners to such fare as naz khatoun (eggplant and walnut dip with pomegranate), anaar polo (turmeric rice with chicken thighs and pomegranate seeds), and smoked fish dishes. The desserts are fabulous too. “A dinner destination,” says Infatuation, so we are excited to visit here and to learn from Chef Sader more about one of the world’s great but often overlooked cuisines.
