La Chinesca
5-Course Baja Meets Beijing Tasting Event
The Mexican city of Mexicali on the U.S. border boasts a Chinatown community called La Chinesca, whose roots go back to the immigrants who settled there in the early 20th century. This new-as-of-2021 restaurant on Spring Garden Street pays homage to that community, featuring Mexican and Chinese influences in a menu that leans heavily on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Overseeing the kitchen for our event will be Nicholas Bazik, Culinary Director of 13th Street Kitchens, whom Zagat recognized in their “30 Under 30” list. Among the dishes that have earned La Chinesca a place on Eater’s 2022 list of “Hottest New Restaurants in Philadelphia” are those that are Mexican-influenced, like shrimp and black bean tostados and baby corn elote, and those that are Chinese-influenced, like duck egg roll, lo mein, and glazed pork belly with Chinese broccoli, citrus hoisin, and fried shallots. “Dream cuisine,” heralds Philly Magazine, and it’s all served up in a funky-cool makeover of an old Jiffy Lube. We’re pumped to try it!
