Maydān

Day 2: 5-Course Tasting Series

Tucked away in an alley in DC’s U Street neighborhood (though we'll be tucked away across the street at nearby sister site Medina) this treasured eatery, opened in 2017, soon landed on both Bon Appétit's and GQ’s Lists of “Best New Restaurants in the US” and Food & Wine named it their 2018 “Restaurant of the Year.” Chef-Owner Rose Privete, born of a Lebanese mother and Sicilian father, also founded the very popular Compass Rose and Kirby Club. At Maydān, which mean “town square,” she uses the restaurant’s centrally located, roaring hearth to turn out fabulous breads adorned with spreads like the classic hummus, walnut casik made with labne and herbs, muhammara with walnuts and pomegranate molasses, and zaalouk with smoked eggplant and pistachios. From that same fire comes za’atar roasted eggplant, charred cabbage, all manner of kebabs, hearth-roasted whole cauliflower, and so much more. Have we mentioned that the setting is absolutely stunning? Well, it is. “Transportive magic,” raves Washingtonian. We’re so excited to visit this Michelin-Starred restaurant!

About the Host:

Eritrea Solomon

Culinary Director

Cultural Storytelling is the language through which Chef Eritrea Solomon best knows how to express herself. Chef Eritrea uses food as a medium to tell stories of immigration, belonging, and nostalgia. She bridges cultural divides, and celebrates her heritage with a cuisine that is an exploration of her Eritrean roots and identity in America. Her dishes mix traditional flavors with global influences, creating a delightful fusion. A former alum of the wood-fired hearth at Maydān, Chef Eritrea has represented Maydān at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen as well as pop-up events in DC and LA.
