Money Cat
5-Course Nouveau Japanese Tasting Event
Opened in January of 2023, this Upper Kirby Japanese eatery is the follow-up to Tobiuo, Chef Sherman Yeung’s celebrated Katy sushi restaurant. So, in no surprise, it vaulted right onto a host of “Best Of” Lists, including Houston Chronicle’s “Top 25 Restaurants” and Eater’s “20 Essential Sushi Spots in Houston” and “38 Essential HTX Restaurants.” Chef Yeung’s concept here is to translate the Asian-American diaspora onto the plate. Inspired by Japanese cookery and drawing on French techniques, the menu is influenced by the team’s personal narratives and passions. That means plenty of inventive touches, like chicken katsu with the addition of tamari caramel or tempura pickles or tiger prawns with roasted cashew puree or honey vanilla milk buns (not dessert!) with smoked trout roe or s’mores kakigori (is dessert!) with cocoa snow and black sesame and smoked marshmallow ice cream. “There’s much to love at Money Cat,” raves Chron. “A stunner with sushi, inventive Japanese food, artful desserts, and great cocktails.” Need we say more? See you there! (BTW, the name signifies a wall of those waving Japanese statuettes that we always enjoy seeing.)
