Day 1: 5-Course Retracing Khmer Roots Tasting Series

Opened just this past February, this Phinney Ridge eatery brings the hidden delights of Cambodian cuisine to Emerald City. So, it's no surprise it jumped right onto Eater’s “Hottest New Restaurants in Seattle” List and Resy’s “Top New in Seattle” List. Chef/Owner Karuna Long, who also owns nearby cocktail bar Oliver’s Twist, honors a long lineage of Khmer cooking that started with his great-grandmother teaching his mom, Sophon, all of the recipes that she, in turn, taught her sons. Entering Sophon brings diners into a space that is decorated with plants, woven wall decorations, and photos of Chef Long’s family. The menu ranges from starters like khatna phas (seared cauliflower with chili and lime) to salads like salat s’viy k’chey (green mango, papaya, green beans, Thai basil oil, peanuts) to mains like kram rmeas santesien (grilled Chinese eggplant, cauliflower, crispy shallots) and kha sach chrouk (pork belly in soy-coconut milk). If you’ve had Khmer cuisine, you are salivating about now. If you haven’t, it is time to discover it. See you there!
