The Spicy Belly
DAY 2: 6-Course Jamaican Meets Korean Dinner Series
Here’s a marriage made in heaven: Jamaican and Korean cuisine. Such is the vision of brothers James and Jason Mills, originally from NYC, who have made The Spicy Belly, opened in January 2017, a fixture in the Manayunk/Wissahickon neighborhood. With their mother from South Korea and their father from Jamaica, the Mills Brothers come by their adventure in fusion quite naturally. Eater says, “While Korean-Mexican cuisine has become more common over the years, Korean-Jamaican is a rare, enticing combination.” The dishes are endlessly surprising—things like a bibimbap in which the fried egg, bulgogi, gochujang, and kimchi sit atop coconut rice and peas and sautéed chayote. Lifestyle blog JustGrubbin says, “All I need is two words to describe the most amazing fusion I’ve experienced in recent memory: Spicy Belly!” We will be taking over the restaurant for this event, and the very engaging Mills Brothers will be on hand to take your questions and share their enthusiasm for their dual food legacies.
About the Host:
James Mills
Executive Chef & Co-Owner
Chef Mills was inspired from an early age by his mother's Korean-infused interpretations of Jamaican classic dishes. A fully self-taught chef, Mills opened The Spicy Belly in January 2017 with his brother Jason as a means of imbuing his neighborhood with his own culinary heritage.
