Tonari
5-Course Italian Meets Japanese Tasting Event
This one-of-a-kind eatery, opened in Chinatown in 2020, was the first to bring Wafu Italian cuisine to DC. And what, you might ask, is "Wafu"? Well, simply translated, it means “Japanese style,” and so the fascinating menu features dishes like burrata with orange segments and Sichuan chili oil, mushroom pizza with shiitake, Parmesan cheese, dandelion greens, yuzu kosho, maple syrup, and ichimi, and a pasta dish like mentaiko, which is tagliolini with cod roe, butter, chili flakes, tsuyu, lemon, shiso, and shredded nori. Washington Post restaurant reviewer Tom Sietsema flipped for Tonari, naming it one of his “7 Favorite DC Restaurants” of 2022, the same year that Condé Nast Traveler named it one of the "20 Best Restaurants in DC." Head Chef Mary Mendoza, a native of the Philippines who emigrated to the U.S. in 2009 at the age of 16, really does wonders here, and we are looking forward to hearing from her about how she approaches this fusion of two of the world’s greatest cuisines. (Chef Mendoza is also nominated for the RAMMY 2023 Pastry Chef of the Year award, so leave some room for dessert!)
