Vera
5-Course Lebanese Meets Mexican Tasting Event
Newly opened in May, this Ivy City eatery magically blends Mexican and Lebanese cuisines, a combo which has vaulted the hotspot onto two 2023 Lists: Eater’s “Hottest New Restaurants in DC” and Axios’ “Best New Mexican in DC.” Executive Chef Jorge Barone has come up with truly inventive dishes like Hummus Alwen (avocado, roasted red pepper, chili de arbol, black beans, labneh, and Mexican zaatar), Reides Fritters (shrimp, filo dough, poblano, corn quinoa salad, labneh crema), and Lamb Birria (lamb loin, birria adobo sauce, garbanzo puree, halloumi cheese). Chef Barone even keeps the fusion thing going with his desserts, with treats such as Mary’s Calabaza (roasted acorn squash with labneh pistachio gelato). Interestingly, Vera is named for Veracruz, Mexico’s historic port city which welcomed a huge wave of Lebanese immigrants in the 1880s. Have we mentioned that Vera is an absolutely stunning-looking place to boot? Washingtonian cites its “Insta-chic dining room with retractable roof.” We’re excited to visit here and to discover a fusion cuisine we never even knew existed!
