Yunta
Day 2: 5-Course Peruvian Meets Japanese Tasting Series
Opened in February of 2022 in the heart of South End, this Japanese-Peruvian eatery jumped right onto Axios’ “25 Best in Charlotte” List (in the #1 spot!) and Charlotte Magazine’s “Best Restaurants in Queen City” List. Chef/Owner Bruno Macchiavello, born in Lima, was the force behind Viva Chicken, a Peruvian rotisserie concept based in Charlotte that quickly developed a cult-like following. Yunta means “friend” and Nikkei is a culinary adaptation that originated in Peru more than one hundred years ago, when Peru became the first Latin American country to enter into diplomatic relations with Japan and Japanese workers arrived in droves. In preparing their traditional Japanese dishes, they made use of a variety of Peruvian ingredients. These creations, which formed the perfect amalgam between Japan's precise culinary techniques and the strong flavors of Peru, come alive again in this gastro barra with a modern industrial vibe. In other words, sushi meets ceviche and so much more, all artfully prepared. Yunta Nikkei is also a great place to discover the pleasures of pisco, if you haven’t already. We’re excited to visit here and to learn more from Chef Macchiavello about the marriage of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines.
